Criminology / Life Course Theory - 1260 Words

November, 30th 2012 CRJ102 161 Criminology; The study of the making of laws, the breaking of laws, and the social reaction to the breaking of laws. (Fuller: Pg 4.) In other words it is the study of how people acknowledge how crime is comited and the resoning behing it, as well as peoples reaction to it. One of the theories that one can study through Criminology is the Life Course Theory, which is a perspective that focuses on the development of antisocial behavior, risk factors at different ages, and the effect of life events on individual development. (Fuller: Pg 140.) This refers to a multidisciplinary paradigm for the study of people s lives, structural contexts, and social change in which they find what are the causes and†¦show more content†¦One of the first steps to deliquency is poor parenting. Parents who are harsh in their discipline provide poor role models. Also parents who do not supervise their childrens activities are more likely to develop offspring who engange in antisocial behavior. The problems of poor parenting and bad conduct can lead to more serious concerns in middle childhood. The social development model hypothesizes that during the elementary school developmental period, children learn patterns of behaviour, whether pro-social or antisocial, primarily from the socializing units of the family and school, with peers and neighbourhood influences playing an increasing role as children progress through the elementary school years. Studies have shown that children who are antisocial perform poorly in school. They might disrupt the classroom and fail to do their homework. They spend less academic time on task and lack academic skills such as regular attendance and participation in the class. One more problem that can cause antisocial behavior would be is rejection from social groups. Romeos moon struck calf-love forRosaline must be laughed out of him by his friends Benvolioand Mercutio, by his guide Friar Lawrence and by his owntrue love. For Romeo doting upon Rosalin, love was maladyand religion; for Mercutio it is sheer lunacy or a brutalconquest(Mahood 398). ;#9;;#9;Mercutios realm of love was lust, also very falseby nature. For all the bad things the be said about lust,it is where all the jokes are and Mercutio being a jokerused it to his full advantage. In trying to call Romeo overthe wall, he tried a certain amount of discussion aboutRoslines body and, when dealing with the nurse, sang arather lewd song. Today Mercutios song would beconsiderable less appreciated and would more likely get himslapped with sexual harassment charges. However, justbecause society doesnt like something doesnt mean that isdoesnt exist. Even with the progress society has made, there are a lot of dirty jokes still out there. ;#9;The love in Verona may be a cult. After Romeo seesJuliet at the dance he immediately falls in love with her. He become obsessed with her. Romeo of the Monagues, after asentimental and unrequited languishing after one Rosaline, falls in love at first sight with Juliet, of the Capulets, and instantly instilled enmity of generations is dissipated Wise,5like mist by morning sunshine and love that embraces Julietembraces everything that Juliet touches or that touchesher(Goddard 119). They are both filled with love and itmakes them quest for each other. ;#9;Romeo and Juliet shared a true love for one another. Both Romeo and Juliet were willing to forsake those thingsthat were important to them for each other. True love isthe most powerful of all in Romeo and Juliet and in the realworld. The nature of love hasnt changed but, with theevolution of our society, its expression has changedslightly. Of all the things is the world, love is the mosttimeless and it is this which makes the story of Romeo andJuliet timeless.

Frankenstein Essays - Frankenstein, English-language Films

Frankenstein Frankenstein Morality. It has been questioned by people, honored by people and revered since the beginning of time. Yet even today not one person can say what is morally right. It is a matter of opinion. It was Dr.Victor Frankenstein's opinion that it was alright to create a "monster". Frankenstein's creation needed a companion. Knowing that his first creation was evil should the doctor make a second? With the knowledge at hand, to Dr.Frankenstein, it is not at all morally correct to bring another monster into the world. Looking at this probelm with his family in mind, the doctor begins his work on the second monster. The first monster threatened Frankenstein and even his family. The monster angrily said to Frankenstein, "I can make you so wretched." (pg. 162) Trying to scare Frankenstein for not creating his mate the monster resorted to threats. If the good doctor does create a companion for his first creation he may be e ndangering others. "The miserable monster whom I had created," (pg.152) says Victor upon looking back at his work. If there is another monster there will be twice the power and possibly twice the evil, which could hurt or kill his family. When and if Frankenstein commits the moral sin of creating another monster he may be rid of both monsters forever. "With the companion you bestow I will quit the neighbourhood of man,"(pg 142) promises the morally corrupt monster to the doctor upon the completion of his partner. When the doctor, if and when he, finished his first creation's mate there is a chance that the monsters will not keep their promise and stay in Europe envoking fear into townfolk. The good doctor, trying to act morally, destroys the monster for the good of the world. The monsters can potentially take over whatever they please. "A race of devils would be propegated,"(pg. 163) thinks Frankenstein to himself in his study. The monsters, if powerful enough, could possibly take o ver Europe. Frankenstein realizes that he can not possibly doom the world to benefit himself. "Shall I, in coold blood, set loose upon the earth a daemon.."(pg. 162) argues Frankenstein with his creation. It is not morally right for one person to unleash such a terror on the world to benefit only himself and his family. Frankenstein will not let any example change his mind on the point that the monster is and will always be morally corupt. Continuing on his point that the monster was too evil to duplicate, Frankenstein says, "Your threats cannot move me to do an act of wickedness; but they confirm me in determination of not creating you a companion in vice."( pg. 163) Frankenstein will not sacrifice his morallity because of persuation from a monster. Although beholding the threat of death and misery Frankenstein held his ground and did not sacrifice his moral. When and if Frankenstein creates another monster he can not feel as if he has done the morally right thing. From creating the monster Frankenstein will some how be making people other than himself unhappy. " I consent to your demand, on your solem oath to quite Europe forever, and every other place in the neighbourhood of man,"(pg. 143) says Frankenstein as he sees the power that the two could possibly possess. The good doctor sees that with his own hands he could possibly scar the world forever. The doctor wants, if anyone, himself to be unhappy instead of all of man kind. "Begone! I do break my promise," (pg. 162) states the doctor angrily. Not thinking about himself but the world unselfishly breaks his promise to the monster. Possessing such a great mind the doctor is able to realize that a greater evil will be realesed upon the earth then upon himself. "Your threats cannot move me to do an act of wickedness,"(pg. 162) says the doctor as he argues his point with his creation. The doctor sees that a greater and more horrible result can come from him making the second monster than not. With the knowle dge at hand, to Dr.Frankenstein, it is not at all morally correct to bring another monster into the world. On the one hand if the second monster Frankenstein Essays - Frankenstein, English-language Films Frankenstein By Mary Shelley 236 pages Setting: Geneva, England Characters: Victor Frankenstein- A determined man who keeps everything to himself. One night Victor decided he was not going to create the female and tore her body parts apart. After that the creature walked in and said, " I will be with you on your wedding day and then left." The next day night Victor left on a boat and threw the body pieces in the ocean. He got back to the Island and was accused of murder. Soon after Elizabeth's death Victor's father died. Victor chased the creature till he himself died in Antarctica. After Victor died the creature disappeared forever. I learned how hard it could be to be different and made fun of. I can apply it in my life because everyone is different and people are often made fun of for being different. I am like Victor because I am also very determined to succeed in life. I wish I could be as brave as Victor was in the story.

Biochemistry of Nutrition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Biochemistry of Nutrition - Essay Example iet enhances the potential for weight loss, and the addition of protein and fat rich foods reduce hunger in an individual, thereby enhancing health and well-being. Reduced intake of carbohydrates will cause the human body to burn up stored fat for energy purposes, leading to reduction fat and weight (Hensley, 18). In my opinion, Atkins diet which is promoted as a high protein diet is really high in fat intake, with fat intake in the diet constituting almost 60% of the daily kcal. Thus means that the fat intake, including saturated fats, is nearly four times the recommended daily intake levels recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA). The Atkins diet which is promoted as a means to reduce weight and enhance health and well-being is not true, as it raises the risk for coronary artery disease (CAD), because of the high levels of fat intake. Studies that have found evidence in support of weight loss suffer from the reliability issues in terms of the high levels of dropouts, raising question marks on the findings of these studies (Kappagoda & Hyson,

Investigation on Hertfordshire Water Supply Contamination Essay

Investigation on Hertfordshire Water Supply Contamination - Essay Example In order to maintain the admissible levels of contaminants and to supply water that is safe for the common people, there are drinking water standards that different water supply systems are required to follow (Zaslow & Herman, 1996). Such an issue of water contamination is also reflected by the case of Hertfordshire water supply, the Chalk Aquifer where a public water supply system got affected by bromated contamination that posed problems with leakage in the site in the year 2000. The accepted standard for bromated in water is 10Â µg/l (Quevauiller & Thompson, 2006, p.40), while in the concerned case, the concentration has been known to reach a level of around 150Â µg/l (Fitzpatrick et al, n.d.). Bromate contamination is of serious concern it is a carcinogenic in nature and pollutes the water drastically (Hill, 2010, p.292). Thus the bromate contamination in the case of Hertfordshire water supply and the leakage in the site of Sandridge near St Albans calls for significant investi gation and study to understand the causes, the situation as well as to find out relevant recommendations for the recovery of the condition, which is the primary concern of the current research and study. The Investigation and Assessment of the Contaminated Site: The investigation and assessment of the contaminated site in the case of Hertfordshire water supply would include the following major steps: (a) identifying the process that has been used in the plant, (b) identifying and assessing how the spillage of bromate occurred, (c) using the different parameters - process indicators, the notification of occurrence of unwanted events, and indicators related to public health – to understand how the plant might have been negligent in some respects that led to the incident, (d) assessing the monitoring measures applied in the plant, and (e) identifying how the plant might have responded to the occurrence of the incident. (a) Process used in the Hertfordshire Water Supply: Studies reflect that the Chalk Aquifer presents a huge source of drinking water (Dassargues, 2000, p.195) for a major part of Greater London. The water is primarily supplied from the rainfall in the region of Hertfordshire (Ellis & Bertrand-Krajewski, 2009, p.112). If an overview of Hertfordshire’s present situation related to the water supply and treatment can be presented, it would reflect the status as in the following figure (Figure 1). Status Current Status Future Expectation Water Framework Directive Moderate Good status has been obtained by around 24 percent of the water bodies. The Hertfordshire rivers determine the low or high quality of the water bodies It is expected that the water bodies in the region have plans to satisfy the ecological needs of the environment by 2027. Quality of Water Moderate The river lengths that have been achieving high grades have shown increase since 1990. The water bodies have been focused on the appropriate treatment of the sewages. Serious rec ords of pollution have not been obtained since 2009. Diffuse pollution risks are still high. Plans to reduce the risks of diffuse pollution. Absolutely no records of serious pollution and reduction of any pollution incidents. Continue with the sewage treatment measures. Figure 1: Overview of Hertfordshire’s water supply and treatment (Allum & Dixon, 2010, pp.3-4). This study reflects a serious factor that the water supply system in the Hertfordshire is concerned about the pollution and the contamination and thus the processes followed are focused on the reduction of such incidents. This also hints that when the bromate contamination

One of the administrators quoted an elderly near verbatim Essay The present is momentary†¦the future will be short†¦ and the long past had been varied†¦good things†¦bad things†¦success†¦failures†¦love and lovelessness†¦ pain and satisfaction of sacrifice for the loved ones†¦And if we have lived that well enough why mourn for this momentary present and unsure short past? Just leave it God. It is a nice thing to think back †¦. and be happy†¦ Indicators of Affective Component of SWB as Perceived by the Administrators Table 3 presents the affective component of the subjective sense of well-being of the elderly as perceived by the administrators of the home for the aged. Table 3. Administrators’ Perception on the Cognitive Component of SWB among the Elderly Domain Categories f P Affective Component Feeling secure of future care / will be taken care of until death 6 100 Happy and relaxed about physical mobility and health 5 83 Apparently happy and peaceful 4 67 Feeling that the family ties are intact 4 67 Feeling that they are still masters of their lives 3 50 Note: N=6. General = category applied to all the cases (100%). Typical = category applied to more than 4 cases (more than 60%). Variant = category applied to fewer than half the cases but at least 2 cases (30%). According to the findings of this study in Table 3, the administrators (67%) perceived the institutionalized elderly to be apparently happy and peaceful. And their happiness consisted in their sense of having control of their life, whereas for 83% it was also in their feeling physically well. About 67% of the administrators found that the elderly were as they experienced a sense of belongingness to the family. And finally, all the administrators (100%) perceived that they felt secure about their future and having the assurance that they will be taken care of until death put them at ease. The succeeding sample responses of the administrators substantiate the findings of the study on this particular aspect of affective component. They appear to be peaceful and happy at least many of them†¦most of the time. All of them miss their family and they try to put up with it. All of them are reasonably healthy even in their 80 plus years†¦ They are happy that they are able to do their things on their own†¦ In old age specially we want people near†¦but these poor souls†¦actually they are not deserted. Those who have no children and single find it a little easier to cope with this life. But others†¦they understand their children and try to be happy. All are happy when they get a call or being visited†¦they go around telling to everybody possible†¦it is very important for them.
